About Chios

Chios is located in the North East Aegean Sea. It is known as one of the most likely birthplaces of Homer, and also the ancient mathematicians Hippocrates and Enopides.

The island is very close to the Asia Minor coast, only 3.5 nautical miles from cape Pounta to Erythrea Inland in Cesme. It is the fifth largest Greek island (842 square kilometers) with a coastline of 213 kilometers and a population of 54.000. The Regional Unit of Chios includes the islands of Chios, Psara, Antipsara and Oinousses.

Chios is a mountainous island. A few valleys are formed in the south and east regions of the island. Pelineo Mountain overlooks the northern part of the island, with the highest peak, Profitis Helias, at 1.297 m. Chios Island is known for its picturesque landscape, and also for the Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and sparse rainfalls in the summer

The main local products are mastic, citrus fruits, olive oil, figs and wine. Chios mastic is a unique product. Apart from the local agricultural products, Chios is famous for its maritime tradition. A lot of Chiots work in the Merchant Navy sector whereas some of the most important Greek shipping companies have been founded by families that come from the island. The town of Chios, called “Chora” by the locals, is the capital of the island.

Homerion Cultural Center of the Municipality of Chios

The Homerion Cultural Center was founded by Michael and Stamatia Xida and its construction was completed in 1980. In 1985, it came under the jurisdiction of the Municipality of Chios and has operated as a public entity ever since. Being one of the most modern convention centers in our country, it mainly hosts scientific conferences.

The main objective of the Homerion Cultural Center is the recognition, promotion and support of the intellectual, artistic and scientific work, which nourishes the emotions and the mind of the youth and encourages people to search and experience a higher quality life. The Homerion also aims to promote the cultural, educational and scientific collaboration between Chios and other cities.

Homerion Cultural Center of the Municipality of Chios

The Homerion Cultural Center was founded by Michael and Stamatia Xida and its construction was completed in 1980. In 1985, it came under the jurisdiction of the Municipality of Chios and has operated as a public entity ever since. CONNECTIVITY

AIRPORT CONNECTIONS

  • Chios has daily air connections with Athens and Thessaloniki, two to three times a week with Lemnos, Lesvos, Samos and Rhodes.
  • It is connected to Ljubljana by direct charter flights, once a week.

Chios City Bus (KTEL): There is a bus stop in front of the airport to take you to the main part of the island.

FERRY CONNECTIONS

  • Daily ferry connection with Piraeus and Lesvos, with Thessaloniki two to three times a week. Chios is also a stopover on the route that connects the Eastern Aegean, starting from Kavala and reaching as far as Ikaria.
  • Daily ferry connection with Cesme, Turkey
  • Daily ferry connection with Psara and Oinousses

Transportation within the island

In order to move around Chios you can use the urban and intercity buses, rent a car or motorbike, or use a taxi. Taxis in Chios are coloured burgundy and white, whereas taxis that operate to the villages are silver-coloured.
